Last week the Executive Director of Bilitis – Lilly Dragoeva met up with Hannah Stevens and Will Buckingham of Wind & Bones in Sofia to talk about our community center – Rainbow Hub and a little bit about the situation of LGBTI people in Bulgaria.
Dr. Hannah Stevens and Dr. Will Buckingham are writers who run projects that explore the intersections of creativity, writing, and social justice. They also maintain a blog called Wind & Bones. Here’s what they posted about the meeting our Executive Director:
Last week, we met up with Lilly Dragoeva from Sofia’s Rainbow Hub, a coalition of three LGBTQI organisations based in Sofia. Rainbow Hub was set up by GLAS Foundation, “Deytsvie”, and the Bilitis Resource Center to act as a community hub, a meeting point, and a place for supporting Sofia’s LGBTQI community.
The Rainbow Hub do fantastic work in a very difficult environment. Prejudice and discrimination on the grounds of sexuality and gender identity are still widespread in Bulgaria. But the news is not all bad. This year’s Sofia Pride had the largest-ever turnout, with between six and seven thousand people joining the march.
In the new year, we’re planning to work more with Rainbow Hub, helping to tell the stories of members of Sofia’s LGBTQI community, and finding new ways of communicating the diversity and the richness of human experience, something that—when we see beyond prejudice, misinformation and discrimination—ultimately enriches us all.
